I am preparing for a medical mission to visit orphanages in Beijing, China. I have researched an article on a visit to Dali Yunnan, China, which was led by emergency department physicians and nurses and a translator. While, we will not be visiting Dali, I feel there is a great deal that we can learn from this group’s story of what to expect and how to better prepare for a medical mission trip to Beijing, China. One of the important things in preparing to care for others of a different culture is to become educated toward their way of living and beliefs.
Demographics and ethnicity
Beijing has a population of 22,000,000 and is the largest city in northern China. (Briney, para. 1) It is also the capital city of China. “It is …show more content…
Mountains to the north, northwest and west surround it. Beijing also has several major rivers flowing through it. “The majority of Beijing's population is Han Chinese. Minority ethnic groups include Manchu, Hui and Mongol,” (Briney, para. 5)
History and Culture
As far as the history of Beijing, communist forces entered in 1949 during the Chinese Civil War. (Briney,) China is a culture of many superstitions such as statues to guard tombs. (Bedford et al., 2014) Dragons were believed to have magical powers and thought to offer protection and good luck (Bedford et al., 2014) “Red is an imperial color” and “blue represent the color of heaven” (Bedford et al., 2014, p. 103) Chinese architecture is one of balance and symbolism (Bedford et al., 2014)
Culture
Beijing consists of many temples and palaces and narrow, winding alleys, skyscrapers and shopping malls. (Bedford et al., 2014) Beijing opera began in the qing dynasty and was banned during the Cultural Revolution (Bedford et al., 2014) As far as food, Beijing is said to have some of the best variety of foods with Peking duck being one of the most famous dishes.
