As an integrated hospital system, McLeod Health is comprised of multiple hospitals in various regions of the state, along with more than eighty physician office locations. Communications of a patient’s care between the various hospitals and offices is a challenge in that each are not necessarily on the same electronic medical record platform, a centralized medical record. Knowledge management, as described by Robbins and Judge (2009), can be extremely effective if it is organized and implemented correctly. Electronic means of managing a large amount of information requires careful planning, extensive communication, buy-in from people required to use this information, and carefully implemented security policies. The hospital has a corporate level systems support team that manages the hospital based systems while the physician offices has its own systems support team to manage the practice based systems. Both departments do not want to give up control and place strict limitations on security and access. Hanse, Nohria, and Tierney (1999) indicate that knowledge management comes in many forms and should be strategically developed around an organization’s goals. Hanse, Nohria, and Tierney (1999) further explain that knowledge management can come in two forms: codified knowledge management and personal knowledge management. I believe that my organization has leveraged both forms but has not strategically planned how it should leverage knowledge management to support communication of our patients’ health
