This Interview a Manager project came about roughly in the same time frame that my company had a massive restructure and realignment. We wiped out many our VPs, let go of 1-4 assistant store managers at all 1800+ locations, downsized the corporate office, and got rid of my position and rebranded it to an elevated position with less of a body count. Along with the staffing changes, the company reorganized the structure of its markets and regions, thus moving my store from the Springfield market to the Kansas City market and under new management. Making through the transition I was given the opportunity to meet with my Market management team to define my new role and learn the expectations of this new management position. After finishing his degree in 1999, he rapidly moved through the ranks of Lowe’s store management positions, becoming a General Manager in Maplewood, Mo in 2006 and then the flagship store for the Region, Springfield, Mo, in 2007. In a relatively short time, he became the Market Director for Market 888 out of Kansas City, Mo in 2013. Ben had many positive things to say about being a manager and minimal dislikes. One of his major dislikes, is the amount of negativity that sometimes must be combated below and above when managing. He likes the amount of positive impact one can have in a management role. This applies to subordinates, the business and customers. As a manager, you are placed in a position that can afford you the greatest opportunity to have positive change within your sphere of influence. He stated that his tried and true method of leadership is “Inspirational leadership, I lead my team the way I expect them to lead. Positive attitude, personal, conflict resolution, respect and the ability to make a positive impact.” Ben’s major focus throughout the interview, training and other interactions with him has always been on positivity. Managers have the awesome title of being both the weakest link and strongest link within a company. If the management team in positive in all aspects that behavior will be infectious and instill itself within the company’s culture creating a positive domino effect in efficiency, given product and service are successful.
