Higher Education Interview

When deciding whom to interview for this paper I first thought about what area of higher education I wanted to learn more about. After thinking of a few different individuals I decided to interview Sabrina Tapps-Fee, a Senior Admission Counselor and Coordinator of the Tour Guide program for the University of Iowa. I decided to interview Sabrina, because admissions is an area of higher education that really interests me. I knew Sabrina had a long history working in admissions and I was interested in learning more about her experiences. To begin Sabrina provided me with background information on what led her to being an admission counselor. Similar to myself, she never really thought about a career in higher education. Sabrina explained to me that as a Student at Buena Vista University she was always focused on health sciences. In 2000 Sabrina graduated from Buena Vista University with a BA in exercise science, sports marketing and coaching. When she told me this I actually was not surprised. Even though her degree is not directly related to her profession now, there are definitely elements that overlap. For example, having a background in sports marketing and coaching relates not only to working with student employees but also counseling prospective students and their families. Her first job in higher education was as an Admission Counselor for Buena Vista University. Working here helped her learn how to communicate with and recruit prospective students. Before beginning this job, she told me that she only planned on staying for one year with intentions of moving into a career related to health sciences. This one-year ended up turning into a 15 year profession, which she said looking back now does not really surprise because of her families background in education. After Buena Vista University she became an Admission Representative for Dunwoody College of Technology. It was interesting to hear about her time at Dunwoody College of Technology because it is very different than the University of Iowa. Similar to what we learned in class, there are many different types of Universities to work at and they all have something different to offer. This class and interview made me begin to think about the different types of schools I would want to work at or attend graduate school at. While I would love to work at a large research facility similar to the University of Iowa, I believe it is important to be exposed and learn about how programs operate at different types of institutions. As an admission counselor, I think it is important to understand and have background knowledge in all of the different options out there to provide prospective students with the correct knowledge. After working at Dunwoody College of Technology, Sabrina began working as a Senior Admission Counselor for the University of Iowa. I asked if she could describe a typical workday at the University of Iowa. She said, “A typical day is anything but typical.” I was actually really happy about this answer. One reason I find higher education interesting is you are constantly being forced to learn and think of new programs while working with many different types of people. She went on to tell me that no two days are ever the same because no two families will be exactly the same. Having a job where you are constantly working with …show more content…
So I asked Sabrina what she has learned about herself along the way. She explained, that over the past fifteen years she has learned that she really enjoys helping people and that there are many different ways one person can help multiple people. She never expected to be a mentor, but she really enjoys knowing something she has said or completed goes onto impacting someone’s decision on where to attend college. She later went on to to say how the families and students she works with ultimately impact her as well. I relate to this statement because I think having a job where everything comes full circle is important. When I first became a tour guide I wanted to show students why the University of Iowa is an incredible place to attend college. After working as a tour guide for almost a year, I can confidently say that working with these families and answering their questions has reminded me why I decided to attend

An editorial article, “5 Myths About Who Gets Into College”, published in the Washington Post on May 23, 2010, is an informative and detailed overview of the admission process for selective colleges and universities in America written by Richard Kahlenberg. The author makes a credible argument which he strongly builds up throughout the article by effectively incorporating logos and ethos in the effort to address sensitive topics such as legacy admissions, class-based preferences, and the existing gap in the socioeconomic diversity in selective universities. Kahlenberg makes a persuasive argument backing up the analytical assessment with evidence-based research from credible sources, primarily building his argument on logos and ethos, and effectively…

Nichols paints the recruitment process as a frivolous experience meant to cater to a student’s every need. Nichols claims “Colleges now are marketed like multiyear vacation packages, rather a contract with an institution and its faculty for a course of educational study.” (72). This is unsound inductive reasoning on Nichols part. He does not offer sufficient evidence other than his own word or a few sporadic campus activities, very exclusive to the individual universities.…

One experience that shaped my character as a person was my part-time job in high school. I worked as tour guide in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…

Précis Frank Bruni’s article “An Admissions Surprise From the Ivy League”(2015), reveals that there is a fatal flaw in the college admissions process because of the unfair advantage that privileged teens possess. Bruni supports his claim by questioning the intentions of the coalition’s new process, acknowledging the harsh reality of the imbalance in the students receiving an acceptance, and providing opinions from experienced college admissions officers. Bruni’s purpose is to argue for actual change because of the huge disproportion in the types of students admitted in order for low income students to get an equal chance at a promising future. Due to Bruni’s direct criticism to the new application process that is still flawed, he is speaking…

Although our problem is about colleges, we don’t want students to be confused on what to do in life after college. We would get freshmen and sophomores focused on careers so as juniors they can find a college to match their career. Students would use the information we give them to fill out a worksheet for both careers and colleges to save for later use. We recognized that some students may not be interested in doing this so we decided to schedule an assembly in February where current seniors and former alumni give their experiences, stories, and regrets while preparing and applying to college. We are hoping that this will encourage students to do the worksheets and dedicate more time to preparing for…

It was an interesting, jovial and interesting interview session with Mr Shane. Speaking to him thought me a lot more about Concordia, and specifically the liberal arts aspect of Concordia. The explanation he provided on liberal arts, and how it impacts our lives not just in school, but also outside of school made me see the importance of it. Grant Sicard 10/23/2016 Graduation Rates of Minority Students A college education has become an important gateway to the middle class, defined as the middle four deciles of income. In previous generations, a high school diploma alone was often sufficient to reach the middle class. Obtaining a college education is particularly challenging for low-income students: poor students are less likely to attend college in the first place, and those who do attend are less likely to graduate. Although for many decades, policymakers focused on college enrollment, they are increasingly setting their sights on college completion.…

Being a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges that students of similar backgrounds face due to not having parents to lean on for academic support. Having received guidance from different programs regarding the transfer process, I used the knowledge I obtained to do something that gave three of my closest friends, who are from similar backgrounds and don’t have such resources, an experience that would ignite the same passion and desire that I have to succeed in college. This was accomplished during the summer of 2015 when I researched, planned, and carried out a trip to various UC, CSU, and private schools throughout northern and southern California. By visiting new universities and visiting academic departments, I hoped…

Future Profession Interview When assigned an interview in my freshman level English class, there was no doubt in my mind that Clint Selman, my honors psychology professor, would be my first choice. There are so many dimensions to counseling; guiding students with their academic path, creating an environment where they feel safe and supported, being a counselor and identifying risk factors. Beyond these dimensions however I believe the two most important characteristic when defining a counselor are adaptability and resilience. Academic counselors come across diverse populations and I believe there is no standard process when guiding students. The counselor should actively listen to the student and build a professional relationship in order to build trust. Equally important is the ability of the counselor to be resilient and to teach resilience.…
