There are so many dimensions to counseling; guiding students with their academic path, creating an environment where they feel safe and supported, being a counselor and identifying risk factors. Beyond these dimensions however I believe the two most important characteristic when defining a counselor are adaptability and resilience. Academic counselors come across diverse populations and I believe there is no standard process when guiding students. The counselor should actively listen to the student and build a professional relationship in order to build trust. Equally important is the ability of the counselor to be resilient and to teach resilience. A counselor should develop a community from the school’s programs and faculty to support themselves

I decided to return to finish my Associates degree, I hesitated because I was not sure what to expect; however, I did know that I would actively seek support. As a result of my TRIO counselor’s support and my determination I was accepted to UC Irvine. I understand what it is to be a first generation, non-traditional student. I understand how value it is to have a support system that will genuinely have the student’s best interest. Therefore, my decision to become a guidance counselor feels natural. My desire is to help guide students that are navigating their academic path blind folded.

Our organization sought out resources to help student with different or added responsibilities. There was a lack of support for our population, but after many meetings with campus staff, faculty, and programs we were able to have our population recognized by the Student Transitional Services, under Student Support Services. It is now a program that is combined with the adult learners group. I’m thankful for my experiences from my academic path; I have gained skills and the ability to understand the different needs of students. As the president of the campus organization and working as a Peer Educator, I had the opportunity to listen to the student’s personal concerns whether they are academic, family, financial, or lack of awareness about the system. I learned that student come from different backgrounds with needs. Their obstacles need to be addressed in order for students to achieve their academic, career, and personal goals. I know that in order to help a student achieve success, one must be genuinely committed. I continually strive to go above and beyond to help students I have worked with. I want to contribute to the success of the students and I believe I can do this through student affairs.
