A few years ago, during my interim days between my entrepreneurial ventures, I left my long time position as the online marketing manager of a San Diego events company. I knew I wanted to find a position in digital marketing, so I found those companies I wanted to target and started making connections with them.
Now, if you read my blog ....... you can guess I didn't go about my job search the traditional way, rather I reached out to the CEO's and top execs of companies. I found myself interviewing with those in top positions in some of San Diego's top digital marketing companies, and with every interview I became more and more confident that I would land that position as a content marketing manager.
Then, a couple of months into my job search, I received a message from the CEO of a San Diego digital marketing company whom I hadn't contacted. He asked me if I was familiar with inbound marketing, I said I wasn't, and he told me that if I wanted to be successful in the online marketing industry, I needed to know Inbound marketing. …show more content…
It took me three tries to pass the test, but I got my inbound marketing certification.
Though, even with my inbound marketing certificate, which to a digital marketing agency amounts to having a certificate in being able to color inside of the lines, they wanted someone with "agency experience." The end of every interaction after the interview went pretty much the same, with the CEO or other top exec in the company telling me that I had all of the experience, but I didn't have agency
