There are several reasons for this diagnosis. Initially I believed it to be Major Depression, however given the fact that it appears to have been one continuous episode of depression I believe that it is a single Major Depressive Episode. According to the DSMV a Major Depressive Episode occurs when “Five (or more) of the following symptoms have been present during the same 2-week period and represent a change from previous functioning.” According to this he matched with a total of seven criteria including 1) Depressed mood most of the day 2) Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities. 3) Decrease in appetite nearly every day 4) Insomnia 5) Feelings of worthlessness 6) Diminished ability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness nearly every day. 7) Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day. …show more content…
It would appear to me that Alia has a manic-depressive disorder. This is characterized by both depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes. To initially start we note that Alia is currently in the middle of a Hypomanic episode. This is defined by
