I see that you agree with me on the client’s diagnosis of Bipolar I, but you have questions about her being in a depressed episode. Major depressive episodes, manic episodes, and hypomanic episodes are not codable. That is, we only use them as the basis for other diagnoses. What we do have is severity codes; mild; moderate; and severe. We use these for both major depressive and manic episodes for the current or most recent major depressive in major depressive, bipolar I, or bipolar II disorders, or the current or most recent manic episode in the bipolar II episodes. With my diagnosis, “current mood depressed” is the episode specifier that best describes the client’s current or most recent episode of illness.
