Lower Level Classes In Public Schools Essay

In public schools they are separating blacks and whites. They are moving the white people up to higher classes and putting black people in the lower classes. In the story it says that you can tell if it is a lower class or a higher class just looking in the classroom. In a classroom at Woodman Elementary in Dover, New Hampshire, three or four groups of students rotate throughout the day, some work on a rug while others work in a cluster of desks. Tracking and ability grouping is not a good thing. It is not fair for students to be grouped by their race or their education. The upper-level classes may be served well by the separation, but the students in the lower-level classes were suffering because they were all separated. This is not fair for the students who aren’t as smart or are a different race from the majority of the school. What teachers need to do is help that person out and focus more on the students who don’t have a very good education. They also need to work on talking to the principle or the superintendent of the school district to get the district back to where it all began where no one was separate. After the Brown v. Board of Education was ruled the tracking system essentially translated into a form of resegregation. Those with money and resources could game the system to ensure that their kids tested into higher-level classes, and poorer children, many of them were black, were left behind in the lower-level classes. That is also not fair because that is also separation. Separation is not fair to anyone. I know I wouldn’t want to be separate from all the others because I was poor or a different race. Substandard buildings, supplies, and transportation often made the educational experience for African Americans inferior to whites. It wasn’t until 1954 with the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education that segregation in schools was made unconstitutional (Document 2), based on the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.
