Self-actualization of ethical responsibilities which accommodate counselors in pursuit of their professional relationship with their clients that is outlined in a standardized protocol by the American Counselor Association (ACA); the Code of ethics is a commitment to the profession of counseling that “empowers the diversity of individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals” (2014 ACA code of ethics, 2014). When recognizing the core values of the counseling profession, there are five expects that are shared: (1) the augmenting of human development during the course of life span; (2) honoring diversity and embracing a multicultural approach in support of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural contexts; (3) promoting, endorsing, encouraging, stimulating, and upholding social justice; (4) safeguarding the integrity of clinician’s therapeutic relationship with each client; and (5) practicing in a competent and ethical manner.
The above core values are the basis for the ACA Code of Ethics attending purpose to set forth the ethical obligations of all ACA members and guidance intended to inform the principled practice of professional counselors. The ethical code also identifies relevant considerations to professional counselors and counselors-in-training. It also allows the ACA to clarify for current and prospective members, and for those
