5 Signs You Are Failing to Delegate

Small business owners know how important it is to have multiple skills and, the ability to delegate some of the many tasks you have on your plate is chief among those skills. The ability to delegate is not simply the act of turning to an employee and ordering him to complete a specific task. Successful delegation requires you to invest the time and the resources necessary to ensure your staff is well-trained and prepared to assume increasing responsibilities. This is the only way you can be certain that delegated tasks are accomplished correctly and in the shortest possible time. This brings us to the first sign that you are failing to delegate.

# 1) Lack of Preparation

A small business owner/entrepreneur must prepare employees and staff for success. Develop their skills by encouraging their participation in projects. Cross-training for employees is an equally important goal that every small business owner should strive to achieve. Mentoring employees in this manner removes real and imagined obstacles to delegation. If you fail to do this, you will only find it more difficult to delegate tasks because; you lack confidence in your employees. If you do not train and provide hands-on experience you are exhibiting the first sign of failing to delegate, which is having prepared no one to whom you can delegate.

Takeaway: Training, cross-training and mentoring is critical to your ability and willingness to delegate.
