Work Affecting Home Life

Superior Essays
Some may say that work does not affect your home life. People also may say that it is very easy to separate their job and home. Is this true? Can a paramedic forget the tragic scene he had to work strenuous hours on when he gets home? How about a Lineman; he/she will get called out at all hours of the night, is it possible for these human beings to turn off their work like a light switch when they come home? The sad truth is unfortunately not, several demanding careers have a direct impact on home life. We are all human beings, and until things like human emotion and sleep deprivation can be overcome, we will always have this issue.

This article directly relates to the challenges of separating work and home. A Survey conducted by this organization concluded a few main topics.
• “More than 40% of employees are neglecting other aspects of their life because of work, which may increase their vulnerability to mental health problems”
These aspects are not directly outlined in this article, so the emphasis shall be place on the metal health in general. We can infer that the other aspects of life they are referring to could be children, significant other, family, and friends. These statistics cannot be used on a broad scale as the survey numbers were not specifically defined. Out of the control group 40 percent is substantial, and could be looked at by other organizations for further research.
• “Nearly two thirds of employees have experienced a negative effect on their personal life, including lack of personal development, physical and mental health problems, and poor relationships (divorces) and poor home

We need to somehow figure out how to separate work and home life for the children. This article should drive home (no pun intended) the point that work does affect your personal life tremendously, and it is our job to separate the two if at all possible. If two thirds of the people in the UK are affected in a negative light by their jobs, how many of us are here in America?
Hypothesis
Our work whether we like it or not directly affects home life in more ways than one.

I really like Ellen Galinsky’s way of gathering data. I believe that gathering information through an interview process is more precise. Who really likes taking a survey? Through and interview process emotion, and sympathy are both factors that can be factored in. I believe I would start with families, more specifically families with blue collar parents. I am no discrediting the suit and tie. I come from a blue collar family so I know how hard it can be. I don’t think a phone survey, or a written piece of paper will give the results that a face to face interview can.
Work and home relationships are a common problem in today’s society. I truly believe that if something is not done soon we may be on a path to destruction

Work is an integral part of present-day society, as it structures the way people live. Many people centre their entire lives around work, as work defines them, and how they interact with the material and social reality. Work identifies the self realization of a person, and allows the person to be a respected member of the community. The idea of work in contemporary society is meant to provide people with meaning and contentment in their lives, while being remunerated for their services. However, I will argue the work many of us do, limits our need for fulfilment in our lives, as work determines our ability to choose how we live and make use of our time, in order to eat, live and exist in society.…

However, Wilcox 's argues that, “Thus, in average families across the nation, married men and married women work roughly the same total hours for their families, judge their marriages to be fair, and enjoy happy marriages” (Wilcox, 54). By writing this he is refuting the argument that there is no equal work in the family anymore. Statistically the stay at home mother does just as much work as her husband who works a 40 hour job. The argument for this would be because she is tending for a house solely on her own, as well as herself, her children, and her husband. Add in dinner, grocery shopping, children 's needs (sports, school, etc), and she works just as much and as long as the father who works forty hours a week.…
