In Jerry Coyne’s “Life is ‘Triggering.’ The Best Literature Should Be Too”, he argues that “life is triggering”; therefore, college classes shouldn’t be a safe zone for students to escape from the images and topics that are uncomfortable or traumatic, but challenge their intellectual minds. I agree with Coyne that a college classroom is there to challenge individuals and prepare them for the aspects of the real world, because things aren’t censored once they leave college.

He argues that “anybody can claim offense or triggering about anything: liberals about conservative politics, pacifist against violence, women against sexism, minorities against bigotry.” If this is believed to be true, Coyne goes on to state that these challenging viewpoints will result in people believing every piece of literature is offensive, including the bible. Depending on the views people have about certain things will, result in opinionated responses that others may believe to be offensive. He used excessive emotion when trying to persuade his audience that trigger warnings shouldn’t be used. At times, he came across very aggressive as if he was forcing this idea upon his readers. Also, Coyne had an annoyed tone throughout the article, because individuals felt the need to categorize the class room as a safe zone. This article steers away from professional qualities. He acted unprofessional when he said, “so often, I must hold must nose to examine their sources.” There is a certain time to be playful but when talking about a serious matter like trigger warnings, his playful nature wasn’t appropriate in the article. This article would’ve been better if he wasn’t so quick to bash other viewpoints on this issue and didn’t respond so emotionally that he seemed annoyed with those who had a different opinion than
