Legalizing Gay Marriage

Gay marriage should not be legal. There are many reasons why same sex marriage should be deemed not legal. One of the reasons is because same sex couples cannot produce children. The purpose of marriage is to have children and raise them (procon.org) “The movement for polygamy and polygamy is poised to use the successes of same-sex couples as a springboard for further deinstitutionalizing marriage.” This quote from Glen Lavy explains that the legalization of same-sex marriage could lead to the legalization of other, more radical non-traditional marriages. Examples of these non-traditional marriages include polygamous and incestuous marriage (procon.org) Same-sex marriage leads to more children living in households with parents of the same sex. This is an issue because growing up with parents of the same sex is not an ideal environment for children. Studies prove this by showing that girls who are raised without a father have a higher risk for taking part in sexual activity at a younger age and becoming pregnant as a teen. Children who grow up without a mother aren't as emotionally secure. These …show more content…
The point of marriage is to stay true to your word by doing your best to stay together so that you are able to raise a family together. Un-fortunately, the divorce rate is 40-50 percent and in 2008 40.6 percent of babies were born to a single mother. According to Ryan Anderson and William Simon “In recent decades marriage has been weakened by a revisionist view that is more about adults’ desires than children's needs… Redefining marriage to include same-sex relationships is the culmination of this revisionism, and it would leave emotional intensity as the only thing that sets marriage apart from other bonds.” In other words, same-sex marriage epitomizes the idea of being married just to satisfy adult’s desires when it should be to successfully raise a child
