Legalization of marijuana has become a highly controversial issue in many parts of the world including the United States. Today, twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have passed laws legalizing marijuana in some form. The debate on legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes has attracted not only the attention of adults but also youth. According to The National Institute of Health, “more than 97.5 million Americans over the age of 12 have used illicit marijuana, and it is considered by many to be a benign recreational drug” (SAMHSA, 2007). Despite marijuana being an illicit drug, adolescents and young adults have easy access. In light of the above-mentioned statistics, any change in the legal status of marijuana could nonetheless have an effect on teenagers and their future. Legalizing marijuana would destroy the youth of this nation, as it would lead to wider smoking of cannabis, resulting in impairment of cognitive functioning.
The either/or debate on legalization of marijuana can seem uncomplicated but in actual People 's responses are surprisingly absurd when asked why they smoke marijuana—just for the high of it. Is the high that good? Hate to disappoint, but the high is not worth it. In a news report by Jason Koebler, it was said, "people who begin smoking marijuana as teenagers and continued into adulthood showed an average IQ drop of 6 points between the age 13 and the age 38" (Koebler, 2012).…
