Learning styles effect student’s ability to be a successful online learner. Auditory learners prefer lectures, audio materials, discussions, and verbal direction. Auditory learning may not be well suited for online learning. Visual learners prefer seeing and reading information. Kinetic learners learn by touching a doing; taking notes for example. (Hassenpflug, Traphagen, & Conner, 2014) Visual and kinetic learns are better suited for online learning than their counterpart, the auditory learner. Proverbs 2:6-7 teach “For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity.” (English Standard Version) Just as God stores wisdom in the righteous, successful online learners must store the desire to succeed. Not all students will be successful online learners
An understanding of the requirements of online learning can help a student make an informed decision as to if online learning is for them. Mark Taormion wrote an article entitled Student Preparation for Distance Education in which he characterizes successful online learners. A large amount of literature focuses on the characteristics of successful online learning. Boyd (2004) created a framework to categorize character traits of successful online learners.
