Explain Why All Content Areas Have A Language

I completely agree with the statement, “If you think you’re not a reading teacher, think again!” All content areas have a language and involve some varying degrees of reading which includes domain specific vocabulary words, sentence structure, text features, etc. that students need to know how to navigate in order to fully learn and comprehend the text. For example, in math students need to understand what terms such as “greater than” and “all together” mean in order to solve word problems. Although a math teacher is not specifically teaching decoding or comprehension, they are responsible for teaching students the language of math so that they are able to fully understand that content. Knowing how to navigate through a text while understanding the vocabulary and structure is a critical skill that students need to master. One thing that I could do differently is to provide students with a choice board at the end of a unit. Most of the time students are expected to complete a pencil and paper test to show that they understand the content, however, for a student like “Bob” it would be best to give him opportunities to do something more artistic. Another way that I could meet his needs is by incorporating more graphic organizers during writing time. Writing is a subject where he does struggle and I think that providing him with a visual organizer, and allowing him to draw, as a way of brainstorming may help him. Incorporating pictures, visual cues, and videos whenever possible, could help “Bob” comprehend the material because it would give him the opportunity to “see” the text in a different way.
