As per van de Mortel’s (2008) research, SDRB may be present within self-report research, meaning the respondents may have documented answers which did not accurately reflect their perception of mentorship; portraying a more socially desired response, and thus resulting in potentially misinformed conclusions. Within this critical incident, the student identified a lack of clarity surrounding their responsibilities; specifically the distinction between the roles of a student and qualified midwife. This uncertainty may have resulted from the short period of time the student and mentor had to communicate their expectations and agree on the scope of each individual’s responsibilities; an effect that has manifested itself within Richmond’s (2006) study. As a result, the mentor was unable to suitably assess the student’s level of competence, causing assumptions to be made regarding their capability, and thus placing the student in a situation for which they had not been prepared. In addition to the aforementioned time constraint, inconsistent partnerships between mentors and students have been known to result in reduced levels of competence among students (Andrews and Chilton, 2000), and further adversely…

Heron (1999) describes learning as having four distinct yet interdependent forms which inform, support, and enhance one another. The first form is practical learning, which entails learning how to do something and is manifested in the competent practice of that skill. Heron describes the first level as the physical level of learning, where one has to show the willingness to learn. The second form involves conceptual learning, which entails learning about something (for example, someone saying “I want to learn about leadership”). This is the intellectual, verbal, and conceptual level of learning, pronounced in statements and propositions.…
