Good morning, today I was asked to talk about the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson of this last conference, and explain my feelings towards it. I read the talk and felt that we as young men & young women should give more service to the church. In the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson, It stated, “Each person has something important to contribute and has unique talents and abilities that help the important work along.” The abilities that we as young women have help the service to spread like a weed. The big change that has helped spread this weed is the prophet just pronounced that 14 and older are now able to start ministering.…

Most of the American society follows a certain set of rules. There are social niceties that must be observed, and while there are variations depending on what area of the United States you live in, for the most part people value good manners, morals, and politeness when dealing with others. However, as Elijah Anderson’s book explains, there is a different set of rules for those who live in the inner city, and a different source of social capital, respect. Nothing is more important in the inner city than the concept of respect, and as Anderson explains a lot of the actions that seem foreign to those who live outside of the world of the inner city make sense when thought about in this context.…

Whether one decides to believe in fate, destiny, free will, or anything else, one thing is always true: people make choices. Every day we make choices. They can be small ones, like choosing to tip five percent more at a restaurant or choosing to wear a green tie over a blue one. But many of the choices a person makes are larger than these, choosing a field to major in, or choosing a spouse, perhaps. Clearly, our choices are important because they determine our character and future, but they are also important because many, if not all, of our choices, directly affect others and the people around them.…

Laurie Halse Anderson had one strong theme in her book Fever 1793 ( the setting in philadelphia), and that is coping with loss because in the story mattie had many deaths, and a family member that left so she would be protected because mattie’s mom had the fever. One theme expressed in Fever 1793 is people cope with loss in different ways. On the other hand, perhaps scenes that are critical in the story are when grandfather dies and mattie is angered, broken down and was all depressed because her role model has died. Like when mattie had to see grandfather died she buried him.…

"A Conversation with My Father" by Grace Paley is a worthy addition to the reading list. Paley's short story, published in 1974, criticizes the American public through addressing the consequences of ineffective communication, which result from the inability to understand differences in perception. Also known as the false-consensus effect, a cognitive bias. Within the decade of publication, America was bloated with conflict, both externally and internally. Growing tension between the people and government regarding the proper role of a democratic institution led to widespread protests, specifically pertaining to the Vietnam War and the threat of nuclear warfare.…
