Joseph’s wife was Anne Weiner, and she was born in Chelsea on January 17, 1910 (Miller interview). They were married on December 26, 1931 in Portsmouth, NH. Joseph and Anne had two kids, Gerald (my grandfather) and Arnold (my uncle) (Miller interview).

Educating was a huge part of Joseph’s life. He attended Harvard University, graduating with the highest of honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. His profession was an educator, and he brought his educating skills to Chelsea to explore his interest in the betterment of the educational process in Chelsea. Joseph made many changes in the educational process during his tenure as Headmaster of the Carter School in Chelsea, which remains a lasting monument to his vision (Miller 2). In fact, Joseph was the Headmaster of the Carter School during my grandfather’s pre-high school years (Schultz interview). Joseph was also a principal and teacher. He was a math teacher for k-9th graders, teaching arithmetic. Along with teaching, Joseph developed a math series/program that he sold to Houghton Mifflin publishing company, who published his program (Schultz interview). Joseph was known as a very modest and dedicated man in Chelsea. He was modest in that he felt very uncomfortable and felt it wasn’t necessary to express his accomplishments to others. And Joseph was so dedicated that he spent 38 years devoted to the betterment of education in Chelsea (Miller 20).
