Jonas Salk
The focus of this biography is to tell the life of Jonas Salk. Jonas Salk was an
American bacteriologist, physician and virologist who is best known for researching on
Poliomyelitis, also known popularly as polio. He is also widely known for developing the first successful vaccine for polio. The biography contains the scientist’s early life, time of his adulthood, what he has done for the society until the time when he grows old and pass away.
Jonas Edward Salk was born October 28, 1914 in New York City. He is the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, which one of his parents is a garment worker. He attended at Townsend Harris High School, then at City College …show more content…
This persuade him to prefer research in medical practice. He received his medical degree in 1939.
In 1942, he worked with Dr. Thomas Francis, a respected virologist and epidemiologist, researching on influenza virus and a vaccine for the virus at the
University of Michigan. In 1947, he went to University of Pittsburgh and became a professor of bacteriology from 1949 onward. He later applied to National Foundation for
Infantile Paralysis and began research on poliovirus.
During the 1950s, Poliomyelitis or polio was one of the most feared epidemic disease. It is an acute viral infection that targets the nervous, resulting in mild febrile illness, with sore throat, headache, vomiting and stiffness on neck and back. As the population of polio victims increases, Salk is trying to develop the vaccine, which later will be renowned as the first successive polio vaccine in history. He wanted the vaccine
to be safe. To ensure its safe, he exposed the virus to formaldehyde for up to 13 day and tested for virulence in monkey brains. After he made the vaccine, he made a trial.

In 1963, he established and became a director at Jonas Salk Institute for
Biological Studies. The reason is to have furthermore research and innovation in medical science for the society. When he grew old, he remain active in researching on
AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency virus.
He died on June 23, 1995 at the age of 50. His legacy still remains in this world.
In conclusion, Jonas Salk became successful throughout his life. Due to having an interest on the medical field, he was influenced and decided to attend in medical school. In the medical school, because of having researches, he had made his way onto treasure, but path is not complete unless he has leadership. Although he did not became a leader, he became a follower and his leader became democratic for the something is found. As a result of all of this happenings, he became successful in researching polio and developed the first successful polio vaccine in the world, which was his one of his accomplishments; and he made his own research center in order to help the society by research and innovation. As a director, he became democratic in order to share opinions from research to find another solution in medical science
