Summary of character’s life Patricia ‘Trish’ Walker of Marvel’s Jessica Jones was raised by her single mother and manager, Dorothy, in a single-bedroom apartment during her early childhood. Dorothy later created the television show It’s Patsy, starring her daughter, as a means of overcoming their impoverished lifestyle. The show became a success, and Trish rose to fame to the point where she was known as the highest paid child star in television history. During this time she went by the nickname ‘Patsy’ after the title of the show, largely at her mother’s behest.
Dorothy’s determination to maintain It’s Patsy’s success and maintain their new lifestyle led to her becoming increasingly controlling towards Trish, to the point of becoming physically and verbally abusive. In turn, Trish began to hate her role as ‘Patsy’ and developed addiction problems; her mother was mainly concerned with how this affected their reputations rather than Trish’s well-being.
To salvage their public image, Dorothy adopted Trish’s orphaned classmate Jessica. Although Jessica and Trish were initially apathetic, if not outright antagonistic, towards each other, they eventually developed a closer relationship after learning each other’s secrets: Jessica overheard

Specifically, Dorothy wanted Trish to be more like her television character in terms of appearing happy, attractive, and satisfied with her life as a celebrity. When Dorothy felt that Trish was deviating from these expectations, she used physical and verbal violence to force her back in line, such as attempting to make Trish develop bulimic symptoms in response to her perceived weight gain (Reynolds & Bresewitz, 2015).
