Jason's Learning Disability In The Classroom

Jason is a 16 year old student who just completed his junior year of high school. Ms. Mau describes Jason as a bright and friendly student with a specific learning disability in reading and reading comprehension. However, Ms. Gutowski describes Jason as being strong in math and time management. Jason is treasurer of the student council and plays racquetball in a community league with some of his friends. He is also an active member of the youth group at his church and on weekends he likes to watch sports. Ms. Smith stated that Jason has been able to successfully obtain a social life, while working and completing his school work on time. This test is divided into five subtests. These measure the broad areas of English, history, mathematics, sciences, and language. In English, Jason received a standard score of 200. In History, Jason’s score was a 275. Jason received a score of 280 in mathematics and a score of 290 in science. In Language, Jason received the score 195. These scores indicate that Jason struggled with his reading and reading comprehension, which reflect his learning disability in those subjects. Jason was tested in the following areas; money management, food management, personal appearance, housekeeping, transportation, educational planning, job seeking skills, emergency/safety skills, knowledge of community resources, parenting and child care, and interpersonal skills. Jason excelled in all areas except for job seeking skills, transportation, and educational planning. Jason’s skill level for job seeking skills and educational planning was intermediate. However, Jason’s level of precision for acquiring transportation was only at the basic level. These results reflect Jason’s areas of weakness, which are reading and reading comprehension. Scoring was based on Jason’s level of completion in each set of questions. Each life skill consisted of basic, intermediate, advance, and exceptional questions.

On March 27, 2016 Jason was given the Career Key assessment to assess and give potential options for his future career and college path. Career interests and aptitude tests are important in helping students choose an appropriate course of study as they further their education. This individualized test looks at a variety of topics ranging from physical jobs, such as a construction worker, to less physical jobs, such as a CEO. Jason received results that indicate he could have a career as a teacher. This aligns with his desire of becoming a high school
