The Significance of Re-examining the Current Practices
Through reviewing the history of introducing inclusive education into Australian schooling, it seems that the government has made some progress of facilitating inclusive education. Quite a few inclusive policies and legislation have exerted positive impact on equity in education. However, the problem of education inequality in Australia is still evident. Australian education was recognized as “high quality but low equity” (OECD, 2004). Likely, Argy (2007) claim that compared to other developed OECD countries, the gap of academic achievement between the difference groups of student cohort in Australia is much larger.
Compared to the primary setting, students in the secondary school may have increasing demand of academic performance so as to prepare themselves for tertiary study or employment after graduation. Apart from adjusting to higher academic expectation and developmental changes in physical and psychological capacity, young students also need to enhance their social competence and foster friendship. Peer influence plays an increasingly vital role in adolescents’ lives (Foreman, 2011). Children learn to develop a more intimate and closer peer relationship with others and build social network while entering the teenager years (De Guzman, 2007). Children with disability who are usually physical weaker than their peers are more likely to experience peer group exclusion and bullying (Pearce & Forlin, 2005).…
