Insomnia: The Causes and Effects
Sleep, it’s something we can’t live without. Sleep ensures we wake up the next day feeling well rested, healthy, and happy. It ensures we operate at our best during the day. However, not everyone is as fortunate as most. Many people, about 30% of adults, experience brief insomnia, while a shocking 10% experience chronic insomnia (Malhorta 9). Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can make it difficult for some people sleep. People who suffer from insomnia may have trouble falling asleep at night, may wake up at all times of the night and may not feel well rested after a full night of sleep. Usually, people who have this disorder are most commonly referred to as insomniacs. Insomniac’s also suffer from irritability due to lack of sleep and may also have a hard time focusing. These are just a few of the things that insomniac’s deal with on a daily basis. Dealing with insomnia may not be easy, however, knowing the causes and the effects insomnia has on a person may help it become somewhat tolerable.
While there are many causes of insomnia, which may vary from person to person, there are some causes that are more common than others. The first one, being something that most people are familiar with, is stress. In our lives, we are faced with many challenges and stressors every day. The loss of a job or a financial burden may hinder one’s sleep (Eddy and Walbroehi 1911). Having to worry about how the bills will get paid can do some damage on a person.…
