Are any of these options and/or types of programs available in YOUR local community/village/town? Which ones? Explain. In my local area there are a multitude of programs and resources dedicated to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” For local residents one of the best places to start is the Brisbane City Council as they committed to the goal of zero waste. This means recycling as much as possible as well as putting systems in place to prevent waste being created in the first place. (cite) To help in their committed target of keep as much material out of landfill as possible the council provides householders with up to three different wheelie bins: one for recycling plastics, glass, paper products and metal, one for green waste such as lawn clipping which are mulched and composted and a general waste bin for everything else. The council estimates that even with the other provided bins 80% of the material in the general waste bin could still be recycled, reused and otherwise kept out of landfill. The council therefore also provides resources and workshops educating citizens further about working towards zero waste and as people gain a better understanding less material ends up at the tip.
