Nurses still to this day have to deal with sexism in the health care profession. Nursing has always been a traditionally female dominant profession and doctors were primarily male. Although the number of men in nursing is rising, there are still fewer men in the profession. It is true that many nurses are women, but 10% of nurses are male. One of the main oppressions in the nursing field is that nursing has a perception of being a “women’s job.” This not only views that a nurse’s work is feminine, but for some reason holds a negative perception that working in a career that is predominantly female has made it less important in the eyes of the public. In order to be a competent nurse, they must execute their duties in a proficient and professional way, without error. Cultural competence is one of the biggest components in nurse competence in the health care profession today. In the nursing field, it is expected as nurses to be culturally
NURSE COMPETENCE competent and understand acceptance of a patient 's health beliefs. If a nurse can exhibit good communication skills, intelligence, and cultural competency then they will have no problem being considered a “Competent Nurse.”
