Cultural Competence In Nursing

The primary aim of cultural competence and movement is to increase health quality, and reduce disparities by concentrating on people of color and other disadvantaged populations (p.vii). Cultural competence is defined for our purposes as the attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary for providing quality care to diverse populations (California Endowment, 2013). The importance of cultural competence in nursing is that it helps to address patient centered-health disparities, life values, respects, and preferences. Cultural competence is what is learnt over or acquired over a long period of time and it helps to prevent misunderstanding between nurses and a patient if done well. It also helps to facilitate the best care through an open dialodge between a nurse and a patient there by opening doors for more openess with the patient ready to share more information, not only for improvement of effective treatment for the patient, it safeguard against potential liability and malpractice claims because miscommunication between a provider and patient is one of the reasons for lawsuit in America. Barrier is another problem, with the help of a tranlator this can be acheived although not safe. cultural competence helps nurses to get more concrete information from a a family members, or caregiver if available. With these new era of nursing, nurses travel all over the world as volunteers in time of diserster or oubreak, being familiar with cultural competences help to prepare for the values, beliefs of the people they are going to meet without being judgemental, but to respect and value their
