1. Describe the topic and why it is important & relevant to you.
This is a topic that consists of several components that contribute to the problem in total. Medical incompetence is, of course, a large area of worry. Stories that should be told as jokes contain disturbing truth, such as surgeons forgetting to remove things like scissors before finishing the procedure. These mistakes are often the result of becoming too familiar with procedures. Once a physician or surgeon has done something enough times, they let their guard down and let muscle memory – or common diagnoses – take control. This leads to them trying to take shortcuts or, as mentioned, being negligent in their actions.

My nursing years will see that I strictly adhere to protocol and remain mindful of the patients’ needs and temperament, so that I can assure they have as an uneventful a stay as possible. Later on in my life, when I am a surgeon, I will still adhere to protocol, while utilizing checklists for as many operations as possible. Even in our current society, with the great strides towards equality we have taken. Jobs like mechanics and loggers are taken up mostly by men, while child care workers and nurses are mostly women. This creates a stereotype about those working in such fields, and a secondary stereotype for the women and men that defy the ‘gender roles’ of such professions.
As a male that is looking to enter the nursing field, such stereotypes directly affect me through the comments and opinions of those I talk to.
2. Describe how you will use this knowledge in your personal and/or professional life.
This bit of knowledge is not surprising, but the ramifications of it are. While I have not had to deal with people that look down on male nurses, it is statistically probable that I will run into patients with such a mindset. The increasing diversification in previously gender-biased professions will be an important bit of information to remember when dealing with such people.
