I am especially interested in exploring interventions that can take place in educational environments, such as the LETS program I learned about in Dr. Hinshaw’s keynote address at the APS conference in May. With the observation that children and adolescents spend a great deal of their time at school with teachers and peers, these environments must be conducive to positive learning outcomes where students can develop and reach their potential, despite challenges related to developmental abnormalities. In my experience working with children and adolescents with disabilities, as well reading informative books, students who experience developmental complications such as the onset of a mental disorder, or a learning disability, and the school and community are not equipped to manage these barriers, it can limit their opportunities to progress. After reading Dr. Hinshaw’s book “ADHD: What everyone needs to know” I became particularly motivated to address challenges in people with ADHD, as it emphasized how much we could do to improve conditions for people who struggle with this disability, and how little is …show more content…
Worth metroxplex. My time in the Center provided me with research skills necessary for both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. I transcribed interviews with HIV-positive people and coded these transcriptions which gave me insight into the struggles of accessing support and health care, as well as the negative mental health factors experienced by these populations. I have also coded interview and focus group transcriptions for an LGBT health care needs assessment where I learned about health care services lacking in the Dallas area for these underserved populations. I assisted in the development of interview protocols for an upcoming LGBT faculty project, which will help bring awareness to the discrimination and hardships faced by sexual and gender minority faculty members in U.S. Universities. Additionally, I recruited participants, analyzed data using SPSS and presented posters at national conferences. I currently am working on an honors thesis “Life Regard, Perceived Social Support, HIV Symptom Load and Forgiveness: Correlates of Optimism in an HIV Positive Sample” as well as a separate manuscript for publication “Shame Due to Heterosexism, Anxiety and Self-Esteem in Older Lesbians and Gay Men.” By being a team manager, I had the responsibility of
