I have always wanted a career that is dedicated to helping others. I transferred from Colorado Mountain College to apply for the nursing program at Mesa and discovered the social work bachelors program, through my social work intro class. I was pursuing nursing but I didn’t feel like it was a good fit for me. I didn’t really know what social workers did, and learning about it in my intro class I became passionate about the career. Psychology was another career I wanted to pursue so that I can be a therapist, but when I learned that social workers can be counselors too, I knew that this was it for me. I wanted to help people more than just physically; I wanted to be a counselor. I strongly believe I am a “good fit” for this position. I know this is what I need to be doing because when I hear about the struggles that people are going through I immediately want to help them. First off I am bilingual and I believe that I would be a valuable asset to the social work field. Translating for others has been a skill of mine since I was a little girl and I think it is very important for there to be more bilingual social workers. I know that a social worker you have to be really compassionate and caring towards the vulnerable population. Growing up we were vulnerable and with the help of a social worker we were able to get through it. From that experience I realized I wanted to do something similar.
