I have always wanted a career that is dedicated to helping others. I transferred from Colorado Mountain College to apply for the nursing program at Mesa and discovered the social work bachelors program, through my social work intro class. I was pursuing nursing but I didn’t feel like it was a good fit for me. I didn’t really know what social workers did, and learning about it in my intro class I became passionate about the career. Psychology was another career I wanted to pursue so that I can be a therapist, but when I learned that social workers can be counselors too, I knew that this was it for me. I wanted to help people more than just physically; I wanted to be a counselor. I strongly believe I am a “good fit” for this position. I know this is what I need to be doing because when I hear about the struggles that people are going through I immediately want to help them. I’m passionate about social justice and participating in the services that improve the lives of others. I understand that dignity and the worth of people are to be acknowledged and respected. I fully understand the concept on competence and that will give me an advantage as a social worker to be able to work with anyone, and respect their differences. I know how to recognize and set a side my biases. Another core value is the importance of human relationships and knowing the relationships of the Latino culture will give me an advantage with working with that population as well. I’m willing to continue on learning about different cultures as well to become more competent.
