Is there a need for the role of HR to change during an economic downturn, and how might

the HR function demonstrate a clear link between HR practices and the bottom line of the

It is worth noting that the world of work is rapidly changing. Advancement in technology coupled with globalization has resulted in a situation where change in one region results in rapid changes in locations far away. In doing this the following questions will be answered, “is there a need for the role of HR to change during an economic downturn, and how might the HR function demonstrate a clear link between HR practices and the bottom line of the organization?” It is the researcher’s belief that there is need for the HR role to change in order to safeguard the interest of both the firm and its employees during time of uncertainty. One single important component that helps organization to withstand the storms associated with economic meltdown or recession is the human resource department. There is need for the department to adopt strategies that will help both the firm and its employees to overcome the challenges associated with economic recession. Despite the fact that the human resource have a variety of role, it is important for the department to slightly change how they approach things especially during such times when the firm is facing or about to face a variety of uncertainty. It goes with saying that most organization during hard times adopts unpopular approaches such as lying off employees, cutting down their salaries, and other benefits among others. Research has shown that all this discourages employees making them leave and work for competitors (Anand & Khanna, 2000).
