Sometimes people with learning disabilities need careful preparation for hospital appointments or admissions and opportunities to familiarise themselves with places and procedures. Issues of consent also need to be understood and addressed in order to avoid this becoming another barrier to access.
Other barriers to accessing services and facilities may include:
Financial: The individual may not be able to take part in a service or facility because of the costs involved.
Communication: The individual may need help such as a translator or interpreter

Psychological: The individual may lack confidence, be anxious when meeting new people, unwilling to accept help
Environmental: There may be a lack of appropriate facilities e.g. Ramps, disabled toilets, transport to get to the facility, carer to accompany them or on site.
People with disabilities face barriers to everyday activities such as hearing what is said, seeing small print, climbing stairs or understanding signage. The impact these barriers create on the life of the person concerned can be major, particularly if the individual has multiple disabilities. The key is to listen to what the individual is saying and to ask them prompting questions which will establish exactly what type of services and facilities they would like to participate
