There are many barriers which elderly may need to overcome to partake in health promoting activities. Some of these barriers include, lack of time, poor health and not knowing anyone in the group (Biedenweg, Meischke, Bohl, Hammerback, Williams, Poe, & Phelan, 2014, p. 5). Other barriers include, lack of social support, accessibility and money (Finley, Stoll & Beller, 2014, p. 6). Active aging should always be promoted when working with elderly (Stuart- Hamilton, 2011,p. 72). Motivation is key, and is what initiates and sustains behaviour (Losier, Bourque & Vallerand, 1993, p. 154). Individuals may be motivated to partake in health promoting activities by doctors who provide clear messages as to why the behaviour change is important, by marketing materials in their community, if there is no fee to pay to partake and the location of the activity or group (Biedenweg, 2014, p. 5). For Joan she faces further barriers, as she is the primary carer for her husband (Stuart- Hamilton, 2011, p. 74). Joan may have a strong sense of obligation to care for her husband and may feel guilt if she leaves (Stuart- Hamilton, 2011, p. 74).
