Smart goal setting is a process of cognitive evaluation of present and future situation and systematically developing, strategically structured objectives, to ensure their achievement. It effectively creates transparent and verifiable trajectories towards a certain objective, with clear milestones and estimation of the goal 's attainability. S.M.A.R.T. goals need to be set according to the following criteria for their realisation: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.
In regards to Alice’s goals, some are specific and not vague and therefore have a greater chance of being achieved. In setting up Specific goals certain questions need to be answered such as What exactly needs to achieved?, Where?, How?, When?, With whom?, Why?, as well as What are the conditions, limitations and possible alternative ways of achieving them?. It is part of human nature to want more than less and therefore our needs and wants are infinite. It is however essential to analyse these multitude of needs and wants as Alice has done to take note of the ones that of utmost importance and for her these are pay off student loan, retire and travel around the world in a sailboat. Her other goals to buy a house as well as save for children’s education and accumulate assets at this point seem vague and may need further refinement such as deciding how many kids?
