Parents are a primary source of children’s social development. Select TWO of the topics covered since the midterm (e.g., morality/pro-social behaviours, gender, race and ethnicity, schools, culture, sexualization of girls, impact of stress, internalizing problems [e.g., social anxiety, low self-esteem/depression], impact of participation in sports, influence of gender on academic/career choices, child maltreatment, and risk and resilience) and discuss how parents influence their children’s social development within these various domains. Peers, media, and society all contribute to a child’s social development. However, the most important and influential source is the child’s parents. Parent’s influence their children’s social development by forming a strong attachment and relationship (Underwood, 2016). Parents can influence other important domains of a child’s social development, such as gender and participation in sports. This paper will examine how parents influence other domains of social development, specifically gender and participation in sports.
