Importance Of Family As An Agent Of Socialization

Improved Essays
Family is one of the top agents of socialization. From the moment you are born parents are teaching you how to act and behave. The job of the parents is to raise the child to be the best that they can be, they teach them how to act in public and how to respond to situations. My parents from when I was little have taught me how to talk, to eat, and the normal habits of a child, like playing with toys, sharing, and sleeping. If I ever did something wrong my parents would discipline me and right my wrong, that help me to learn from my mistakes. The book says that parents are the most influential agents of socialization and I completely agree with that. Most of my parents beliefs and habits are passed down to me and I do similar things as they …show more content…
As a child I didn’t have as much independence because I depended on my parents, but as I’ve grown up I’ve earned independence. They taught me how important independence is and how great it is to have it. With family being an agent of socialization it has given me a sense of belonging to a couple of different groups. Well of course I feel a sense of belonging to my family, but I also feel a since of belonging to my family friends and groups that my family are involved in. I also feel an acceptance by my church I go to because since my parents took me there as a child, I’ve become a part of the church and the people in it. Sometimes though my family made me feel like I wouldn’t be accepted by my peers because we all have those parents that try to be embarrassing, well my mom likes to try her hardest …show more content…
These friends are similar in age to you and around you most of the time. As you get older your peer groups help influence you more. I was homeschooled from first grade to sixth grade, so I really didn’t have any interaction with my peer groups. Only in the fall and spring when I played soccer, I sometimes felt like the odd one out because I was never kept update on all the new trends and I really didn’t socialize with kids my age very often. Once I hit sixth grade the influence started happening, going into my sixth grade year my style was horrible compared to everyone else’s, I didn’t know how to make friends, and I didn’t have any of the technology that everyone had. As I went through middle school I was influenced by my peers, I gained a since of style based off of other people, I joined sports teams, and I even got a phone because everyone else had one. Through high school though I don’t let people influence me anymore because I’ve found who I am, so the only time I felt influence was through middle school. One thing I learned about my culture through my peer groups is the norms of my culture. I learned little things about acting in public, like never asking personal questions, how to greet people, and how to treat friends. Certain groups that my friends help me feel a belonging to is the student section, different academic groups, and the drama club. My peers are all

Do you, as an individual, conform to society or do you like to show people that you are different than most others? Out of the seven billion people who live in this world, most would say they conform to society, which is very natural. Humans are social beings and conforming to society is one way that we show each other that we are like them. Sometimes we feel obligated to conform by the people we respect, look up to, or people who are in higher positions than us. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man”, Logan Feyes states that, “conformity can be seen as the world’s most common but dangerous psychological disorder.”…

My classmates would always refer to me as the whitest black girl they knew due to the fact that I was and still am a very quiet person, I didn’t speak slang as often as they did, I didn’t dress like them in and going into high school I was never one for parties, drugs and alcohol. I felt isolated within my own community. So most of most of my adolescence and teenager years have been spent with me being an outsider.…

The language the was usually heard when I first moved in has also changed throughout the years and has had an impact on the type of people I now interact with on the daily basis. With the different cultures growing and moving into the neighborhood I live in I have begun to see a change in the type of local shops, clothing, and food. Even at the local schools, I can see the changes in culture and how schools try to have better interactions with the children.…

Literature Review: Socialisation throughout the lifespan Socialisation is the process by which individuals learn and recognise patterns of behaviour expected of them by the society (Beattie et al, 2014). This is a ‘continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behaviour, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position’, (Dictionary.com, 2016). However, the primary and driving influencers of an individuals socialisation during the aforementioned stages are family, friends and those within the community. Another branch of socialisation is gender socialisation, a ‘process of learning the social expectations and attitudes associated with one 's sex’ (Chegg, 2003-2016).…

Much of your parents ideas are passed on to you. Same would be with society. How a group of your friends may act, also influences how you act. For example, in the book when the savage group of children decided to break away from the common group, a few left the common group and left to the other group with the savages. This shows that influence takes a large role in how we act.…

After I left those friends I felt lost and confused like i hadn't really planned who i was going to be friends with and what I was going to do next.…

The opposing views of “nature versus nurture” have evoked an abundance of disagreements ever since the early years. Both sides of the debate theorize that every individual has different personalities. The “nature” aspect argues that our genes influence our character, while the “nurture” aspect argues that our environments influence our character. This controversial issue in psychology has convincing ideas from both perspectives, which is why it is still a widely talked issue by social scientists and psychologists today. The start of the famous debate dates back to the ancient Greek period, with well-known philosophers such as Plato who sided with nature and Aristotle who sided with nurture (The Earliest Psychologists), where the basis of these…

Homeschooling, also known as home education, involves the education of children at home instead of receiving education at a traditional private or public school. According to Bauman (2011), many students are schooled at home and the number in the United States is growing at 15 to 20 percent per year. It is a system in which parents prefer their children to be educated at home and argue that it is more beneficial for them. There are those who advocate homeschooling, while there are some skeptics about homeschooling as well. Homeschooling is becoming very popular and many see it as being a bad idea due to the fact that teachers in traditional schools are better qualified due to years of training, the child’s socialization skills will be negatively…
