Importance Of Family As An Agent Of Socialization

Family is one of the top agents of socialization. From the moment you are born parents are teaching you how to act and behave. The job of the parents is to raise the child to be the best that they can be, they teach them how to act in public and how to respond to situations. My parents from when I was little have taught me how to talk, to eat, and the normal habits of a child, like playing with toys, sharing, and sleeping. If I ever did something wrong my parents would discipline me and right my wrong, that help me to learn from my mistakes. The book says that parents are the most influential agents of socialization and I completely agree with that. As a child I didn’t have as much independence because I depended on my parents, but as I’ve grown up I’ve earned independence. They taught me how important independence is and how great it is to have it. With family being an agent of socialization it has given me a sense of belonging to a couple of different groups. Well of course I feel a sense of belonging to my family, but I also feel a since of belonging to my family friends and groups that my family are involved in. I also feel an acceptance by my church I go to because since my parents took me there as a child, I’ve become a part of the church and the people in it. These friends are similar in age to you and around you most of the time. As you get older your peer groups help influence you more. I was homeschooled from first grade to sixth grade, so I really didn’t have any interaction with my peer groups. Only in the fall and spring when I played soccer, I sometimes felt like the odd one out because I was never kept update on all the new trends and I really didn’t socialize with kids my age very often. Once I hit sixth grade the influence started happening, going into my sixth grade year my style was horrible compared to everyone else’s, I didn’t know how to make friends, and I didn’t have any of the technology that everyone had. As I went through middle school I was influenced by my peers, I gained a since of style based off of other people, I joined sports teams, and I even got a phone because everyone else had one. Through high school though I don’t let people influence me anymore because I’ve found who I am, so the only time I felt influence was through middle school. One thing I learned about my culture through my peer groups is the norms of my culture. I learned little things about acting in public, like never asking personal questions, how to greet people, and how to treat friends. Certain groups that my friends help me feel a belonging to is the student section, different academic groups, and the drama club. My peers are all
