How Literacy Has Changed My Life
Literacy is something that we use in our lives daily. We use this knowledge to communicate with others, by speaking, reading and writing. It is good to keep honoring our literacy skills in order to improve the way we communicate. Imagine talking to someone or reading something and not being able to understand what is being said. Eva Hoffman’s Lost in Translation: A Life in a New Language is a good illustration of how it feels to not be able to comprehend what is being said. Hoffman moved to Canada, where she knew nothing about their language. She only spoke Polish so she was unfamiliar with the English language. In order to adjust to her surroundings she had to learn how to speak, read, and write English. Before she was literate in the English language, Hoffman felt lost, confused, and frustrated. Not knowing how to read or write relates to Hoffman’s situation because it can make someone feel lost, confused, or frustrated. Just like Hoffman, we were all born not knowing how to communicate, read, or write, which means that we all had to learn to be literate to understand others. Literacy is important so that we could make sense of the things happening all around us. I have personally been one to struggle with literacy so I had to learn how to overcome my fear.
When I first joined school, I was four years old and had no clue of how to read or write letters. Learning about literacy was like learning how to walk, it takes a lot of practice…
