Removing myself from my phone over Thanksgiving break sounded tough. When you don’t have school you just want to relax and be by yourself. Although, I didn’t exactly have a choice in doing this because we would be writing a reflection essay on it when I went back to school. Even though I hadn’t really formulated a plan for this, I was surprised when Thanksgiving break presented itself with many opportunities to remove myself from my phone.
The first opportunity to remove myself from my phone wasn’t really an opportunity. I had gotten really behind on my school work leading up to Thanksgiving break and the main reason for that was because I was distracted by my phone and video games. When my mom found out she took my phone away from me for a solid day and whenever I was catching up on my late work.

There were many positive things that I got out of this experience such as getting missing work done, interacting with my family, giving my eyes relief, and allowing myself to think about other things rather than what was on my phone. I didn’t experience a whole lot of bad from this experience except for the fact I had to hook up the old dusty home phone to contact my parents Sunday night when they were at church small group.
Based on the results of removing myself from social technology, I found that it’s quite healthy for your mind and inner relationships to have a good amount of down time from social technology. I went to dinner with some friends and usually I have to ask them to put their phones up, but I didn’t this time. I wanted to see how meanigful our conversations would be without phones versus with them; I can say they were a lot less meaningful. Everyone was talking to people, but not to the people they were with. They always had to answer that Snapchat or take that Buzzfeed quiz. When our food arrived they obviously put their phones down, but really they just talked about what they saw on their phone instead of having a conversation with each other.…

In today’s world, phones play a major part in life. For many, going without a phone is equivalent to living completely isolated, which Thoreau did when he spent two years living alone at Walden Pond. For me, going to a technology free sleep away camp for seven weeks was a similar to Thoreau’s experience. Through his time alone, Thoreau learned to live in the moment, focus on what he was doing instead of the rest of the world, and reflect more on himself, all which is shared in his story Walden. Thoreau was able to live in the moment without the constant reminder of what others were doing, which is unachievable with a phone.…
