School Shootings Are Not Enough for Stronger Gun Control Laws The Jonna Semeiks article “We the People Confront Sandy Hook” discuses many different factors that contribute towards explaining why school shootings and gun violence are inadequate to inspire stronger gun control laws. The deaths of children are not enough to offset the strong ties that American society has towards guns as a symbol of freedom, which causes people to respond with internal defense mechanisms that numb the pain of these tragic events instead of feeling a need to take corrective action. Semeiks presents a valid point that gun control reforms are needed; however, in order for that to happen anytime soon, the American people will need to largely shift their attitude on this topic. The author provides several examples successfully supporting that main idea.…

My rhetorical ecology’s primary goal is to articulate the many levels of statistical data surrounding gun control in the US. I start off the presentation with the Bill of Rights and immediately provide commentary from individuals who played a fundamental role in the foundation of the United States. Then, I state current gun control laws currently in place. From here on out, I expand on specific analytics: mass shootings, other deadlier killers, and total firearm violence. The audience this argument appeals to is people who react to gun control regulations after mass shootings occur.…

A logical assertion can, and is, made that certain background checks are desirable in order to decrease the amount of deaths caused by guns. However, we need to understand the effectiveness of these checks, that many who want a gun will go to any means to acquire one. In a study conducted by Daniel W. Webster and Jon S. Vernick of John Hopkins University, over 80 percent of criminals evaluated were not lawful retail purchasers of firearms – as most acquired their weapons from sources such as family members and street sources (Source 1). Additionally, we need to understand that certain firearms illegal in certain states are brought in from other states in which they are legal. Both observations show that while increased background checks and illegalizing specific weapons do have an effect, they may only slow those who will do anything to have powerful armaments.…

Every day in the local news, viewers witness a host of tragedies that have hit Chicago every weekend and sometimes every night. Many of the stories featured concern gun violence and the amount of deaths or injuries resulting from it. It has become a problem so synonymous with our city that many people, from neighborhood activists to politicians at Capitol Hill, have expressed their opinions as to what the city and its residents could do to either minimize or eradicate the violence. In late 2013, the state of Illinois passed the Concealed Carry Law which permitted registered gun owners to carry a concealed weapon on their person. Though many pro-gun activists viewed this as a win and an enforcement of their protection under the 2nd Amendment,…

Five years ago, Sandy Hook shook the nation. People watched the national coverage of the massacre that targeted elementary aged children, many as young as 5 years old. I thought then, that the American people would never let a child stare down the end of a barrel again. Sadly, I was gravely mistaken. Since Sandy Hook, five years ago, 7,000 more children have died from gun violence in the United States.…

PARKLAND SHOOTING SURVIVORS VERSE THE CONGRESS CHAMBER ON GUN BRUTALITY By now, we all recognize the lethal anecdote of the Parkland, Florida shooting. A 19-year-old who had procured multitudinous weapons traipsed into his high school that he was expelled from and shot and killed 17 undergraduates and educationists. And even though these shootings are developing more and more continually, I reject to get used to it. I equally reject to assume the implication that nothing can be done.…

Manifesto: Gun Violence in America - Inspired by the Work of Henry David Thoreau I lately gave attention to a news report regarding a brutal shooting, expecting, as one among many, for the incident to result in stricter gun regulations; but I felt astonished and distressed to find that the news stories merely reported the tragedy that took the lives of the innocent, fading from the headlines without any worthwhile preventative actions. I had thought that with the vicious occurrences of violence, more multitudinous by the day, ordinary citizens would begin to ponder sensible gun legislation; but countless citizens of the United States have argued over the constitutional right of all to possess a firearm, and not one citizen spoke up and made his voice heard for the innocently murdered, not one even made reference. Only the second amendment, which speaks of firearm security only for a militia, appeared to concern them. The inhabitants of our once-strong nation need to prepare to stand with the unfortunate victims whose voice can no longer make statement and speak of protection from the menacing people of our world.…

Argumentative “You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don’t enforce them, people are gonna find a way to protect themselves. We need to recognize that bad people are doing bad things with these weapons. It’s not the law-abiding citizens, it’s not the person who uses it as a hobby” (Steele). There are around 100,000 victims of gun violence each year (“Brady Campaign...”). Action needs to be taken so Americans don’t feel unprotected going into a public environment.…
