How Lingerie Changed Over Time

From bloomers to thongs, pointy brassieres to push-up bras, the history of lingerie reveals a lot about the changing role of women in society – how we perceive them and their body along with it's exposure to the world. It is fascinating to see how lingerie has changed over the last hundred years but even more intriguing to note what has stayed the same. Looking into todays one of the most well know and probably most famous brand Victoria Secret and the shows they organise we cannot skip the fact how extravagant and over the top it is. So the main question I want to discuss in this essay is how lingerie and people’s views on it changed over the years and what factors of history influenced these major changes.

Without question we can thank to Victoria secret, underwear brand which probably took lingerie to the next level. Victoria secret, the brand was found at 1977, by businessmen Roy Raymond and since then underwear slowly become more openly showed and talked about, slowly, but steady lingerie became an essential in women’s wardrobe and more and more people realised that it can look sexier and help our bodies to look more desirable without changing its main purpose. The name of a first shop “Victoria” had many speculations then and probably now for those who don't really dig in to its brand history deeper. So who is she? Everyone would ask then and now, but the true is that the name is more about decor than any particular woman. Raymond in 1992 told Vogue, “ The look was meant to impart the sense of class and dignity associated with the Victorian era, and the Queen for which it is named.” Apparently he and his wife chose” “Victoria” to emphasise the historic association, and “Secret” to double up on the sense of intimacy for shoppers.” - time.com journalist Fabry wrote in her article “ The History behind the “Victoria” in Victoria’s Secret “. The brand most of its time was always successful, but in 1982 when the ownership changed to the sportswear company owner Leslie Wexner it skyrocket and soon became and still are one of the most popular shops to shop for lingerie and it is probably because of the changes which Wexner made at that time by making shop more concentrated to women customers than men. We can not forget adverts they use, always including most popular supermodels at the time and most importantly fashions shows they organise, the shows which is one of the most waited event every year, celebrities wants to be included and others crave to watch it.
