When a person is faced with adversity, they must use their strengths to power through it and come out on top. In Liam O’Flaherty’s, “The Sniper”, the republican sniper has to risk his life fighting for his people with the risk of him getting killed at any moment. In Richard Connell’s, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford, a big-game hunter, must use his prior knowledge to try and escape the island without getting killed by General Zaroff. At the start of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford falls off a yacht and he is forced to swim in hopes of finding land. When he finally finds land he meets General Zaroff who enjoys hunting humans. He gives Rainsford a chance to leave if he is not caught within 3 days. Rainsford must use his hunting knowledge

In “The Sniper”, he was shot in the arm, with the bullet piercing one of his bones. The author states “Then he lay still against the parapet, and, closing his eyes, he made an effort of will to overcome the pain” (O’Flaherty 3). This shows that even in a situation where he got shot and is in extreme pain, he tries to stay calm and power through the pain that he is going through. Without this kind of bravery he may of just given up and accepted defeat. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was able to last the 3 days without getting caught. General Zaroff, congratulating Rainsford says "You have won the game” (Connell 23). Rainsford was able to use his bravery and intelligence to outsmart General Zaroff without getting killed. Without this quality Rainsford would not have been able to stay calm in certain situations and know what to do when making difficult choices. Overall bravery can help you fight through both mental and physical adversity. As long as you have it you will be able to push through any obstacle that comes your way. It's important to have the tools to overcome adversity because you will be faced with many different types of adversity and you need to be able to overcome it and keep pushing
