“I think it is important to have a debate before going to war. Americans are different. They have to believe they are righto go to war. If they become uncertain about the validity of the reasons for war, they lose faith in the government.”
“Do you think we are right to fight in Iraq?”
“No. Although Afghanistan is another issue, I worry about you twice.”
“Twice?” I questioned.
“I worry about you, dying in combat, and I worry that you will live like I live. Sarge told me that combat haunted him and was the reason his first wife divorced him. You get over the fear of dying, but when a soldier has seen friends die and has killed men, a wall is built between the inexperienced and him.”
“Are you telling me not to join?”
