Jeanette’s mother is a woman who is being portrayed as a hypocrite throughout this novel. She tries to be perfect but knows that’s not possible for her but she portraits herself as perfect she uses the disguise of religion to cover up her tracks. She is one on the most devoted member of the church, she wakes up on Sunday mornings pray and also meditating “my mother got up early on Sunday and allowed nobody into the parlor until 10 o’clock. At the beginning of the novel Jeanette’s mother doesn’t show that she loves Jeanette; instead her love grows when Jeanette fills her expectations and it grows less when Jeanette
