Rough draft
Thesis: - Power makes man hideous; Lord of the flies shows how power led majority of the boys towards darkness, how Jack wanted to have an upper hand over Ralph and how Roger slayed Piggy under the influence of Jack. They were not born vicious; it was their yearning for power that made them barbarous.
“The way to have power is to take it.” Unacceptable things are done to gain supremacy over society. Power attracts the inferiors of all mankind and corrupts the finest. “he rubbed the charcoal stick between the patches of red and white on his face” (Golding 79). The first instance where Jack paints his face. Savagery was inviting Jack to her. Jack then looked his reflection in water and disliked it and planned a new face for him. He made his one cheek and one eye socket white in color, then he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a black bar of charcoal across from right ear to the left jawline (Golding 79-80). He was so obsessed to hunt that he forgot who he really was. He laughed with excitement when he saw his reflection in the water. His laughter than became a bloodthirsty snarl (Golding 80). He hid his true self behind his atrocious mask, he hid from himself, his shame, his self-consciousness. Rest of the boys were compelled by the mask; it was a symbol of killing for them. They then became hunters, hid all their civilized learnings behind the mask and were taken over by savagery. Ralph was the monarch of the wild at that time, the boys found Jack to be amusing. Ralph was sincere but the boys wanted adventure, they wanted fun, they wanted something to distract them from their realities. But in doing so they really forgot how to remain civilized. They started hunting pigs and Roger sharpened an end of a stick and they stuck up the head of the pig. From the first day …show more content…
Jack waved his spear in the air, made the boys gather around him and asked “who will join my tribe?” Ralph disagreed with his question, “you all chose me as your chief, I am your chief!”-Ralph. “I gave you food and my hunters will provide us with safety from the beast.” (Golding 185). Even though unintentionally, the quest for power consumed Jack from all his morals. He went on to making his own tribe. ‘twas an extreme step, he was a control freak and could never be under someone else’s rule. So he chose to make his own kingdom and disobey his King. To be the king of his own kingdom, he had to have himself pawns, knights and loyal servants; which he stole from Ralph. Power drives madness through a man, not just one particular man but the whole mankind. From the era of the kings to the modern era there is one thing that has not changed; ‘to be in Power.’ Jack was not born evil, he was a kind, humble human being, it was the circumstances or the island(society) that made him vile. He would have never done this if he was civilized but being alone on an island and no one to look over the boys, drove them to do the things that they never even dreamed

Jack is a distinct example of the instinct of savagery, desire of power, and violent nature that the boys come to follow. Jack is Ralphs antithesis, or opposite in other words. Immediately, Jack retains the sense of decency and behavior that society has taught him. Susan Gulbin quoted Golding in saying "every man is part savage and that savagery is disguised or concealed only by the wall of civilization built by our ancestors" (Gulbin 87). Jack soon obsesses himself with hunting and devotes himself to the task, painting his face and giving himself over to bloodlust.…

“Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power” (Goodreads). John Steinbeck’s quote asserts that people do not get corrupted because of power, they get corrupted because of the fear of the power. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Jack does not use his dominance to control the other boys; he instills authority into the boys making them fear him. By doing so, Jack controls the actions of the boys and changes their morals.…

When authority is rescinded, evil and malevolence take over. That is the message portrayed while reading William Goldberg’s Lord of the Flies, a novel focusing on a group of grade-school boys who are deserted on an island after a plane crash during war. This theory becomes apparent when the development of the main characters Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, as well as the group of boys as a whole, is analyzed. To facilitate analyses, it is easiest to break the development into three stages, the beginning, where authority is present, the midpoint, where authority has fallen, and the ending, where malicious intent overwhelms the boys.…

When society breaks down, death and destruction incur. In the book The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding the effects of the breakdown of society is a major theme. Humans identities are formed when society’s rules and laws are non existent, and humans are forced to rely off of their own morals. This can be seen when Ralph’s tribe is demolished by Jack because of Jack 's different ideology . In addition, Piggy’s logic and intelligence when talking about advanced topics on the island also show how identity is formed through a lack of societal laws.…

POWER STRUGGLE IN LORD OF THE FLIES Power is believed to be the only thing stronger than fear. When Lord of the Flies was published in 1954 the novel is considered to be about humans that are inherently evil and when given power, how they choose to use it. Golding demonstrates this through the use of characterization examining Jack and Ralph as individual characters; symbolism is used to illustrate the power in the novel; and lastly, the conflict/dialogue between Ralph, Jack and its effects on the atmosphere. In Golding 's novel Lord of the Flies, he implies that with power comes responsibility and the capability to abuse power or act with righteousness.…

Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding in 1954, but is set in an unknown time period. It is about a group of boys that were in a plane crash and had to find a way to survive on a deserted island long enough to be saved. The protagonist in this novel is Ralph, a young male who was elected as the initial leader of the boys when they first arrive on the island. Throughout the novel the antagonist, Jack, revolts and gets others to begin to follow him. Jack was a more successful leader because he revolted and started with nothing and was able to end with a larger tribe than Ralph, he was able to please his tribe more than Ralph, and he had the confidence to allow his tribe members the freedom they desired.…

When they get there they are welcomed with food, though the young boys are met with pleasantries, Jack has an ulterior motive for the boys being there. Initially, Jack is polite in the way he confronts Ralph’s tribe by asking who will join his tribe. When Ralph undermines Jack’s ability to lead the situation takes a turn for the worst.…

In Golding’s Lord Of The Flies, readers can feel and witness the dangers of a child’s childhood if there isn’t a great role model to help their young minds grow into responsible and civil human beings with important life skills. A child’s childhood is very crucial as they grow. Childhood can be very crucial because it shapes the child’s growth, health, mental/physical skills and more as they age into adulthood. For example in the reading Golding makes Jack a character who is very mean and ruthless, this may lead readers to believe that Jack has had a rough childhood with mean and bossy role models or maybe even worse, no role models at all. Golding’s characters weren’t all like this, for instance, Ralph may have had a great role model(s)…
