I will be talking about what was popular in music during the 90’s and how these events molded and shaped music during that time. It was a time when musical taste was as varied as the events that were happening at the time; a few of these were Gangster Rap/Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, and R&B. In the 90’s, Gangster or (Gangsta) Rap was the most popular; some artists that were popular at the time were Ice Cube, Ice-T, and Snoop Dog. Most of these rappers made songs about the events that happened in the 90s. A good example would be Ice-T. He was best known for his raps about street life and violence, and his influence on the gangster rap genre. Pop/hip hop music was the second most popular in the 90s, some artists and their albums were Michael Jackson-Dangerous, Janet Jackson-Janet MC Hammer and the Spice Girls-Spice. Rock & Roll and R&B were the least popular at the time, some artists and their albums are Jay Z- Reasonable Doubt, M.C. Hammer- Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em, The Scorpions and many more. One example for the Cold War and Gulf War would be; Ice Cube who wrote an album about the Cold War (he was working on it in the 90s and was released early 2000) this album was called War & Peace Vol. 1 (The War Disc), he wrote it because he wanted to show how the Cold War, Gulf War, and other wars had affected the world and our culture. A second example would be a song by The Scorpions released in 1990 it was about the cold war, called “Wind of Change”, they wrote this song to celebrate the end of the war and described how things were during the cold war. Another example is a song written about the Gulf War, called “Gulf War Song’ by Moxy Früvous, it was released in 1993; this song was written to tell about how things were at the time. Great examples for the Los Angeles Riots influence on music were Ice cube and Ice-T. They made a few songs about the 1992 Los Angeles Riots; Ice Cube wrote an album “The Predator” he wrote this because he wanted to show how angry he was about the riots. In 1992, Ice-T, wrote "Cop Killer". “This song quickly drew widespread condemnation for inciting violence against police officers. The artists claimed that the song was simply intended as a commentary on the police brutality and racism felt by the black community in Los Angeles” (“Ice-T”, pars. 10).
