Elizabeth Stern is one the greatest heroes in medical history. She found out how two hundred and fifty stages of cervical cancer could advance from normal to cancerous. To elaborate, she found a way to detect cancerous cells in the cervix before they progressed. Before Stern’s discovery, those diagnosed with cervical cancer had almost zero percent chance of life. Now, twelve-thousand eight hundred and twenty people are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year; however, only four thousand two hundred and ten people pass away.…
A cancer diagnosis isan increasingly common event and affects nearly everyone, whether directly or indirectly. The prognosis and treatment process is not the same for any two individuals. That being said, breast cancer patients are often throwninto a culture of identifying as a “fighter”or a “warrior”duringtheir treatment and are deemed “survivors”once in remission. While this may provide a sense of community for many people,I think there are negative consequences to thisbreast cancer culture. With reference to Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Welcome to Cancerland,”I will explore the loss of personal identity and forced optimism placed on breast cancer patients due to breast cancer culture.…
magine yourself getting reading for school in the morning and all the tasks that go into preparing yourself for the day ahead of you. You take a shower, fix your hair, maybe do your makeup, brush your teeth, put your school materials in your backpack, and slip your shoes on and head out the door. What do all of these tasks have in common? All of these everyday activities involve holding onto things and moving from one point to another. Now, imagine that you have Charcot Marie Tooth disease, a form of muscular dystrophy that causes muscle degeneration in the arms and legs along along with perpetual, shooting nerve pain.…
Lupus is an auto-immune disease that has been diagnosed more frequently as the research into this disease has progressed over the last 20 years. For many year doctors struggled with understanding this disease and diagnosing patients was difficult, sometimes resulting in misdiagnosis. The treatments used for the disease have gone from extremes, from chemotherapy to holistic medicine. I am excited to see the progress that has been made in research, diagnosing and treatment of this disease to better educate myself on its entirety. I believe the research I will be conducting regarding this topic, will help me better understand the disease that my mother has suffered with for the last 30 years.…
Around ten years ago, my aunt gave birth to a beautiful little girl. They called her Sarah. She was a brilliant little girl. She wasn’t like any other child I’ve known. When she was two, instead of playing with dolls and prams, she liked to run around catching spiders in the garden and other creepy crawlies.…
My grandfather did not want to disturb my studies so I was only told when he was already very ill, thus I felt was very important for me to spend his last moment by his side. It was during this time that I first began volunteering at the pediatric department of the hospital he was staying at. My grandfather’s cancer also spurred an interest in nonsurgical treatments of cancer that led me to shadow Dr. Simon Cheng, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2013, in the midst of multiple health issues, my mother was told that she might have breast cancer. Since my father was working in China, I took time off to be with her.…
My empathy for people dealing with cancer stems from this knowledge of how my family survived through this ordeal. I realised how the national health services were able to prolong his life expectancy and this has prompted me to pursue a career in healthcare as I too want the opportunity to provide a better and longer life for those diagnosed with cancer through treatment. This combination of medical technology appeals to me as a long-term career in Radiotherapy as it combines my keen interest in healthcare and technology. As a technology enthusiast, I enjoy learning about new developments and how this will affect future generations to come. My interest in the advancements of technology, which I have seen follow through childhood, allow me to appreciate the opportunity of using technology in a medical aspect to help treat malignant tumours as a…
In 2012, two million deaths globally were caused by cancer; preventing those deaths could save many lives, including family and friends (World Health Organization). Although cancer does not personally affect everyone, cancer causes many controversies for family and friends. The effects of cancer impact many people’s lives, mainly friends and family of a patient with cancer. One way cancer affects family and friends is financially due to the cost of the treatments, hospitals, and bills that come along with having cancer. The treatments for cancer cost a lot of money; like chemo a few days of the week until the tumor is weakened.…
In Search of My Family’s and My Garden In her piece “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens” Alice Walker discusses how black women in America during the period of slavery were miraculously able to get lost in their own forms of art. These women did not have a room of their own or money, as Virginia Wolfe deems necessary for the creation of art. Black women at the time did not even own themselves. Through stories of Walker’s mother, Walker comes to realize that her mother who worked on the fields all-day and tended to the family before and after work actually was an artist. She points out that her mother was “radiant, almost to the point of being invisible” when she was working in her garden (241).…
The biggest and most known disease in the world is cancer and once a person has it, there is no way to make it completely go away. Cancer patients all around the world go through chemotherapy, and although I can’t fix the side effects that it has on people, maybe I can make some adjustments so that it does not feel and look as bad as it is. My grandmother suffers with lymphoma and has to undergo chemo twice a month and I can already see the toll it has taken on her. She has been losing hair very quickly, and is almost completely bald. I want to change it so that the chemotherapy does not ruin the cells that are responsible for hair and nail loss.…
Cancer. A six letter word powerful enough to crumble the world around you. The word cancer originated from Greek physician Hippocrates, (460-370 BCE) who used the term carcinos and carcinoma, to describe the finger-like spreading projections of an ulcer forming tumor. Therefore it is perceivable that cancer is not a new disease, however there is a large inflation among people that Cancer has plagued recently. Cancer is said reported to afflict 1.7 million Americans each year while killing 600,000.…
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease. The cancer I will be researching is brain cancer. The reason why I chose to research this is because I have always been interested in working in the medical field, but I didn’t know what particular area. I started to do research on different types of doctors. The one that interested me the most was Neurosurgeons.…
Research is the key foundation of learning as well as a stimulant of the mind; it causes people to further investigate a subject that they are interested in and to develop various viewpoints on the subject. However research comes at a price, not only in the form of hard work, stress, and mental strain, but also in the form that most often eludes research from being done, the monetary form. In the medical world, research is fundamental to further not only the ability to diagnose, to treat diseases and disorders, but also to prevent them from reoccurring in subsequent generations. This lack of funding is seen specifically with Leukemia research, and is affecting progress towards a cure by delaying treatment, creating more difficult diagnoses,…
It would be cancerous for Americans to not continue to find and develop cures for calamitous, disturbing diseases. Cancer, has affected everyone with not just experiences personally but close friends and relatives. Research for all diseases are constantly being updated but especially cancer, due to several possible treatments and diagnosis. Centuries ago and even just a few decades ago cancer was being misdiagnosed or unable to be diagnosed. Radiation and Chemo are two of the most commonly used and known treatments, there are huge differences between pediatric and adult cancers and the way they are treated, diagnosed and removed.…
Statement of Purpose My grandfather and father were physicians and as a consequence, there was always an influence on me to be the next generation physician. We had a family garage, where my father and I used to repair our old-modelled motorcycle together with various other broken domiciliary machines and passed hours there. I was fascinated and excited by all these equipment and the idea of being an engineer in the future had peeped through my mind several times. But those could never surpass the family influence.…
