The rapid technological advancements in the medical field has allowed for many generations and billions of people to attain a longer life expectancy, contributing to the aspect of an ageing population where the average length of life continues to improve. When I visited the Macmillan unit at my local hospital, I was amazed to discover that although cancer survivors had doubled within the last 40 years, the number of patients/cases for chemotherapy had doubled since last year. However, this was due to the sheer number of cancer cases/patients/survivors who were living longer than expected but were still receiving treatment over time. My empathy for people dealing with cancer stems from this knowledge of how my family survived through this ordeal. I realised how the national health services were able to prolong his life expectancy and this has prompted me to pursue a career in healthcare as I too want the opportunity to provide a better and longer life for those diagnosed with cancer through treatment.
