Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease. The cancer I will be researching is brain cancer. The reason why I chose to research this is because I have always been interested in working in the medical field, but I didn’t know what particular area. I started to do research on different types of doctors. The one that interested me the most was Neurosurgeons. Neurosurgeons are doctors who specialize in surgery on the brain and spinal column. The brain is such an interesting thing, but some people don’t get to use theirs due to Brain Cancer. I want to help these people get to experience the power of the brain like everyone else.

The most common operations performed are biopsy, neuroendoscopy and craniotomy. A biopsy is usually the least invasive surgery wherein the surgeon removes a small part of the tumor to examine the type. Neuroendoscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure in which the neurosurgeon removes the tumor through small holes in the skull or through the mouth or nose; this allow the surgeon to remove the tumor without damaging the brain. Craniotomy is a procedure in which the surgeon removes a section of the cranial bone, the tumor is sought out and removed then the bone is replaced. In some cases the bone needs to be permanently removed, which is a craniectomy. All of these surgeries have their own list of risks and out-patient instructions that make maintaining the surgeries results
