This is not true in any way, shape, or form. This stereotype is one of the worst ones because it can cause people to fear those that are homeless when they really do not have anything to fear. There are homeless people that have committed crimes, but these crimes are mainly things like sleeping in public. The homeless people really don 't have anywhere to sleep so they have no choice but to sleep in public. They get arrested for it and are then seen as terrible criminals. Another thing people believe are that all homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics. This is definitely not true as many of the homeless are not either of these things. This stereotype makes it very hard for a homeless person. It makes it harder for them to do anything such as get a job. People will not want to hire a homeless person because they think they are lazy or drug addicts. This even applies to some of the homeless shelters because they will put the homeless people in substance abuse counseling even if they have no addictions whatsoever. The stereotype that homeless people are lazy is probably the main one of them all. Homeless people without jobs did not lose their jobs by choice. Some of them lost their jobs because of a company shut down or some other thing that they have no control over. Living as a homeless person is not relaxing or leisurely at all. In fact, there are many homeless people who have jobs. After they get off of work, however, they face humiliation from society and they have to figure out where they will sleep tonight since they do not have a place to live. They face threats from people, harassment by the police, and lack of cleanliness where they are staying that specific night. Homeless people are constantly on the move. If you see a homeless person sleeping on a lawn looking peaceful it doesn 't mean it 's like he 's on vacation. He 's just getting a few minutes or hours of sleep and has nowhere else to do it. Homelessness is not a happy, carefree existence, it is a miserable one. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness among women. Over 90% of homeless women are victims are severe physical or sexual abuse. Escaping this abuse is what causes them to be homeless. One cannot simply call these women lazy or drug addicts when all they are doing is escaping abuse. Stereotypes will always be a bad thing when it comes
